"It's pretty interesting that the demand for work in
the oil patch
overlapped the changes that made ranching less dependent on cowboys.
When you consider the timing, and note that the same land that feeds
cattle also produces oil, it almost seems too much to be pure
coincidence."
"I was working on this when DJ
called and said that he had to fly in for a weekend firefighting course
in Vermillion, AB. I picked him up at the airport and since we see
so damn little of each other anymore, I went with him. He spent
the days in class, and I worked on Extension at the hotel."
"Man" Deej said, "Have our lives
taken an odd turn. 15 years ago we'd have been up all night
teaching Vermillion what a good time really meant. Now, we're just
a couple of old Duffs who're drinking diet root beer, falling asleep to
TV cartoons!"
"And we're still going to feel like crap in the morning, except
instead of a headache and nausea, it'll be a sore back and crackly
knees." I said "And you're crazy if you think I'm going to drink any of
that root beer ... I'll be up all night with heartburn!"
